Abstract Scope |
The quarternary (Mn,Fe)2(P,Si)-based material is one of the most promising systems with a giant magnetocaloric effect (GMCE) near room temperature. Here, fluorine (F) and sulfur (S) have successfully been introduced. For F doping two interesting phenomena have been found: (i) an enhancement of the magnetic moments and (ii) a stronger first-order magnetic transition. For comparison, S doping presents detrimental influences on GMCE. Neutron diffraction, combined with DFT calculations, confirm that the substitutional F and S atoms prefer to occupy the 1b and 2c crystallographic sites, respectively. The tunable GMCE properties with F/S doping are analyzed in terms of the atomic distances among different atom pairs and are compared with other light elements (B/C/N doping). Together with theoretical electron localization function (ELF) calculations, these results clarify the subtle changes in atomic distances, covalent bonding, and magnetic order. Our current study illuminates how light elements affect the magnetoelastic coupling and the GMCE. |
