Abstract Scope One of the key characteristics of HSLA steel is its ability to absorb energy during the propagation of a crack, thereby preventing product failure. Based on an understanding of the general premises for increasing toughness, the need to achieve a homogeneous and dispersed final structure is obvious. Meanwhile, even singular large grains in the final structure, inherited from the initial austenite, significantly reduce the metal's resistance to fracture. The cause for the singular large grains is the formation of abnormal austenite grains during the reheating of the slab, followed by a nonuniform austenite structure after roughing rolling due to the different recrystallization kinetics of grains of varying sizes. Considering this, comprehensive research was conducted to study the influence of slab reheating conditions on the grain size and homogeneity of the austenite, and to evaluate the consequences of forming a nonuniform structure on the austenite grains after roughing rolling.
