Abstract Scope |
The effort to develop Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMGs) with critical casting thickness up to 1” has resulted in several alloy formulations, primarily being Zr-base. The glassy state of BMGs provides high yield strength and net-shape forming ability, which have been considered valuable for various structural applications. However, the commercial success of BMGs is yet to realize its greater potential. This is in large part due to scale-up issues of BMGs during mass production and also due to certain characteristics of mechanical properties. This presentation will give a concise review of scale-up efforts and will detail the underlying scale-up issues key to broader success and applications of BMGs. The issues and lessons learned from various applications will be compared and reviewed. Some recent developments to broaden and facilitate BMG applications will also be discussed. |
