Abstract Scope |
High-flux low-energy He-plasma can greatly alter the surface of tungsten plasma-facing component (PMC) in nuclear fusion devices and lead to a low-density layer of nanofuzz. These pre-existing surface reconstructions could strongly influence the tungsten divertor’s response to the thermal oxidation in cases of air ingress accidents. However, oxidation data on tungsten nanofuzz are limited. This talk will present our recent efforts to utilize a novel 1 bar in-situ environmental TEM (ETEM) to mimic fusion air ingress events. In-situ ETEM observations revealed the evolution of tungsten nanofuzz during high-temperature oxidation in air at the nanoscale in real time. We will also assess the impact of nanofuzz structure on tungsten oxidation kinetics. |
