Abstract Scope |
Soft magnetic materials for high frequency applications play an increasingly important role as power electronics conversion systems adopt emerging ultrawide bandgap semiconductors. Ferrites are premier materials for switching frequencies of 100kHz and above, but traditional manufacturing pathways based upon powder processing and consolidation processing suffer from limited scalability and flexibility to produce components large enough for high power applications in the high kW to MW range. In addition, the saturation magnetization of ferrite-based materials is limited as compared to alternative metallic alloy systems typically used in high power applications reducing maximum obtainable power densities. Alternative manufacturing pathways are therefore of interest to enable flexible and scalable additive manufacturing techniques which can overcome limitations of traditional processing pathways. Binder jet printing-based manufacturing methods combined with advanced post-processing techniques will be discussed for state-of-the-art ferrite systems, seeking to achieve highly dense and scalable components with attractive properties for high power applications. |
