Abstract Scope |
Extra Super Duralumin (ESD) is a high-strength aluminum alloy developed in Japan before World War II. The Japanese Navy requested an alloy development with a strength of 600 MPa and far higher than that of super duralumin Alcoa 24S. Dr. Isamu Igarashi of Sumitomo Metal (at that time) responded to this request. The biggest problem in the development was stress corrosion cracking. He discovered chromium as the additional element that suppressed cracking and invented Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Mn-Cr alloy, ESD, in 1936. This alloy extrusion was used in the main wings of Zero fighter and contributed to weight reduction. The U.S. military obtained an intact Zero fighter, found out ESD, and had Alcoa produce an equivalent alloy, 75S in 1943. This alloy became the representative aircraft alloy as 7075 after the war and is still used today. The detailed history of this development, which spirit has been inherited by UACJ will be explained. |
