Presentation Title Development of Thermodynamic Database in the Fe-Mn-Ni-Co-C System for Battery Scrap Recycling Processes

Abstract Scope Recycling valuable metals such as Ni and Co from battery scraps has become an essential substitute for securing critical resources. The various pyrometallurgical extraction technique is developed for mass processing without unattractive byproducts produced by hydrometallurgical processes. In the pyrometallurgical processes, carbon is used for the reducing agent and electrode material of slag cleaning furnaces. It influences both recycling efficiency and CO2 emission. To find the optimum condition of the carbothermic reaction while minimizing greenhouse gas, it is required to know the basic information of the distribution behavior of alloying elements and carbon with heat loss during the waste material charging and reduction reaction. In the present study, thermodynamic modeling was carried out in the multicomponent Fe-Mn-Ni-Co-C and its sub-systems. Using the Modified Quasichemical Model (MQM), the strong interactions between alloying elements and carbon have been thermodynamically analyzed by considering the short-range ordering of C exhibited in the liquid alloys.
