Abstract Scope |
Structural and functional alloys often face trade-offs in design strategy, where optimizing one property degrades another. Recent work by Han et al. has shown that an AlFeCoNiTa multi-component alloy can overcome these classical limitations; enabling the co-optimization of soft magnetism and high toughness by tailoring the size of a nanoprecipitate within the matrix. With additive manufacturing, complex geometries and novel microstructures can be produced by varying solidification rates and thermal gradients: enabling site-specific control, affecting both magnetic and mechanical properties. This study explores the suitability of laser-based processing for achieving tailored nanoprecipitate size in situ, without the need for complex heat treatment. Constant laser energy densities and varied scan speeds were used to determine the effects of solidification velocity on elemental partitioning and precipitation. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrates control over nanoscale, L12 precipitates. Our findings suggest this alloy system can achieve desired structure-properties-performance through in situ or post-process heat treatments. |
