Abstract Scope |
The automobile industry is facing an exponentially increases of production of electric cars with lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). For a sustainable automobile and battery industry, the spent LiB must be efficiently recycled in an and environmental-friendly manner. Most of the current LiB recycling technologies have been focused on recovery of the most valuable metals such as Co and Ni. Attempts have been made in many projects to also recover the other components such as Li, graphite, electrolyte. This paper will discuss the challenges and opportunities in recycling of spent LiBs with focus on these mentioned components, as well as the environmental challenges such as the hazardous that could be formed during shredding and processing of spent LiBs. Potential formation of PFAS will also be discussed based on the experiences from studies carried out at Swerim. The economic challenges for recycling of LFB will also be highlighted. |
