Abstract Scope |
This investigation uses in-situ EBSD/HRDIC to explore the interaction of the microstructure with twin nucleation in Mg. In particular, key questions regarding the twin ability of a grain and twin variant selection are analyzed. It was found that twin pairs are nucleated more often than single twins at grain boundaries and, contrary to conventional understanding, not all twin pairs result from twin transfer events. Instead, a predominant number of twin pairs at grain boundaries form through the co-nucleation of two twins in neighboring grains. A comprehensive statistical analysis, considering Schmid factors, geometric alignment of twin plane normals and shear directions, and the activity of basal slip in the parent grain, sheds light on twin transmission, co-nucleation and single twin at grain boundaries. The role of twin shear direction and how it is oriented with respect to the grain boundary traces in twin nucleation and selection is revealed. |
