Abstract Scope |
Reducing CO2 emissions and utilization of CO2 in the steelmaking process assists in lowering the overall carbon footprint in steel processing. In this work, decarburization of hot metal with and without silicon has been studied to identify the effect on the kinetics and possible utilization of CO2 for hot metal decarburization. Using the confocal laser scanning microscope and gas analyzers, the surface of the carbon saturated hot metal was observed and the bubble formation analyzed. In particular, the effect of silicon content in the decarburization and liquidus of the hot metal, which can affect the carbon activity in the melt, was determined. |
