Abstract Scope In the process of strip production, roll wear directly affects the shape quality of strip. The traditional prediction model of roll wear is established by slicing method. This model is used to predict work roll wear in hot rolling production line of a steel mill. It is found that there is deviation between the predicted results and the actual wear, and the prediction accuracy of the model is insufficient. Therefore, the surface wear of the roll used in the production line was studied. Based on the analysis of work roll wear form and rolling parameters affecting roll wear, the traditional roll wear prediction model was optimized by genetic algorithm. The optimized model is verified, and the prediction accuracy is increased by more than 30%. The accurate prediction results provide a basis for the formulation of the shape control strategy when rolling silicon steel in this production line.
