Abstract Scope |
The prediction of fatigue damage for structural components subjected to fatigue is a complex issue and the development of non-destructive monitoring approaches in real-time becomes an important goal to predict the residual life of components.
The present research is focused on proposing a novel procedure for performing contactless measurements of stiffness degradation and crack density during fatigue tests by using the analysis of the thermal signal in the frequency domain. In particular, several tests were carried out on CFRP specimens by using IR sensors and one extensometer to monitor the stiffness degradation. The results of the experimental campaign in terms of crack density and stiffness degradation assessed at different stress levels are in good agreement with those provided by analytical models and demonstrate the capability of the proposed parameters provided by the thermal signal analysis to describe damage mechanisms affecting the specific material.
The proposed procedure leads to estimating the crack density and, more in general the damage, in those applications where it is difficult to detect transverse cracks with a direct measurement using common experimental techniques. |
