Abstract Scope |
Metallic structural materials face a challenge in balancing strength with plasticity. Gradient structure (GS) possesses a typical trans-scale grain hierarchy and can achieve a remarkable synergy between strength and ductility because of a pronounced mechanical incompatibility and subsequent strain gradient at hetero-interfaces during plastic deformation. In this work, we conducted ultrasonic surface rolling processing (USRP) under the same processing parameter on two low-carbon lath martensitic steels with different initial microstructures. We discussed the evolution of microstructures in heterogeneous regions and the mechanical properties of different initial microstructures after USRP. It is noted that the comprehensive mechanical properties of the martensitic steel retaining a small amount of ferrite treated with USRP have been further improved, which provides an effective method for the improvement of plasticity and toughness of ultra-high strength martensitic steel. |
