This study investigates the gradient stress creep test, Δσ, as a parallelized creep test. A conventional creep test can take years to complete and provides one creep curve at a single isotherm and isostress condition. The Δσ test hastens creep resistance testing by capturing multiple creep curves across a range of stresses; thereby reducing the number, volume, and duration of tests. Parallelization is achieved by performing non-contact strain measurements on the surface of an hourglass-shaped specimen with a known stress distribution.
In this study, Δσ tests are conducted on Steel 4130 at 482°C (900°F). The creep curves of Δσ and conventional creep tests are gathered using digital image correlation and compared at a range of stresses (210-240 MPa). It is determined that the creep curves are equivalent. The Δσ test successfully reduces the number, volume, and duration of testing required for assessing creep resistance. |
