Abstract Scope |
Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in energy storage applications such as EVs, computers, and stationary devices. These devices will reach their end-of-life at some moment, however, the materials that compose the battery have a potential value as material for either the manufacturing of a new battery or other applications. Nowadays, the metal-oxide materials are recovered by a combination of pyro and hydrometallurgy. However, this process require a high water consumption and the presence of different chemical compositions can be a challenge for some processes. This research aims to show the possible application of molten salt systems for the recovery of Cobalt, Lithium, Manganese, and Nickel from the cathode materials by reducing them from an oxide state to a metallic form. This process looks to approach the challenge of multiple chemical compositions used in different Lithium-ion batteries and reducing the consumption of water, which is a critical resource. |
