Abstract Scope |
Precipitation strengthening in the AlMgCu system is a well known process allowing to improve mechanical strength. These phase transformations are driven by the vacancy-triggered diffusion-based processes. Thus, it seems to be possible to control these phenomena via playing with the density of vacancies or their mobility. The former is possible by applying various thermal treatment approaches while the latter can be achieved by microalloying. This study explores the possibilities of affecting the pre-nucleation and nucleation processes which finally leads to precipitation strengthening. Experimental alloys were studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry and high resolution scanning electron microscopy coupled with atomic resolution elemental mapping. The results clearly show that by manipulating nucleation and early precipitation of strengthening phases the final mechanical performance of the alloys can be tailored. |
