Abstract Scope |
This work studies the impact of the thermomechanical loading path on the response of a High Temperature Shape Memory Alloy (HTSMA). Isobaric actuation and isothermal loadings were first performed to study martensitic transformation either induced by stress or thermal cycling. Experiments were then performed by cycling temperature and stress simultaneously (in phase or out of phase) to trigger combined stress induced and temperature induced transformation. Various maximum stress levels were studied for a given temperature range. 3D Digital image correlation (DIC) and thermal imaging allowed a deeper analysis of the nucleation of martensite and irrecoverable strain. A micro-DIC high magnification camera was used in the set-up to improve the understanding of the nucleation process. Results showed differences in the transformation and irrecoverable strains for the different thermomechanical paths reaching the same stress level. |
