Abstract Scope |
Exploration of the solar system to the Moon and beyond will be dependent on the use of local resources (lunar regolith) to produce metals/alloys and oxygen. These resources must be produced efficiently such that their mass exceeds the mass of any needed consumables or spares to sustain the process. The ROXY process developed by Airbus has many commonalities with the SOM process and is most promising for solar system exploration since it meets all of the viability criteria. The ROXY process has been further advanced by dropping the reactor from the system concept which leads to further improvements in terms of compactness, simplicity, efficiency, and mass and power budgets. Work towards a lunar demonstration mission based on this advanced concept called “Mini-ROXY” is currently ongoing. The presentation will cover the mission goals and implementation options, the design of the lunar demonstrator and will provide an outlook to future activities. |
