Abstract Scope |
In the work herein, a "problem-driven, science-deep" approach is presented as a way to address the utilisation of bauxite residue (or any other Fe-rich slag or tailing). The particular focus is on converting bauxite residue into a supplementary cementitious material, and attention is placed on ways to overcome the three hurdles in doing so: vitrification, milling, and mix design of the final binders. The three corresponding, and most promising, developed processes are presented, with details on the technologies available today or under development. Interestingly, some of the proposed processes integrate know-how from other material processing routes, and that implies a rather high technology readiness level/moderate risks, but in some cases, there is need for both fundamental research and process development. |
