Abstract Scope |
Until recently, the high-speed study of in-situ defect mechanisms and phenomena in metal additive manufacturing by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) have been limited in temporal and spatial resolution at synchrotrons. With the advancement of X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) facilities with x108 higher brightness than synchrotrons and significantly narrower bandwidths, well-established X-ray imaging techniques in other fields can now be implemented to observe deeper insights in the physics of the LPBF process. Transmission X-ray microscopy (TXM) at XFELs is one way to dramatically improve the spatial and temporal resolution by orders of magnitude. The experimental details of our microscope design, construction, and experimental integration at the Linac Coherent Light Source, LCLS, at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory will be discussed. |
