Abstract Scope |
A compound forging process using lightweight alloys has been applied to automotive parts to reduce weight. This process involves a bimetal system with a steel and aluminum, combining the mechanical strength of steel and low density of aluminum. This method is suitable for high-performance mechanical parts such as automotive gears. The primary challenge is achieving robust interface strength after forging, which requires optimized material flow and diffusion. To address this, the semi-solid state of aluminum alloy at the interface, known to enhance interfacial diffusion under high pressure, is utilized. Various process conditions, such as forging displacement and temperature, are experimented, and interface is analyzed in terms of microstructure observations and joining tests. Additionally, finite element (FE) simulation is used to calculate local deformation and stress at the interface. Based on experimental and FE analysis, the optimum conditions for bi-metal aluminum-steel compound forging are investigated. |
