Abstract Scope |
This work investigates the effects of composition and cooling rate on the microstructure and wetting behavior of Al-Ce alloys and composites. Cerium composition is varied from 2-18 wt% and two types of reinforcement particles (Graphite and SiC particles) are used for the composite manufacturing. The microstructural evolution in both the alloy and composite are analyzed. The impact of cooling rate on the intermetallic size, eutectic fraction, and grain size are analyzed, necessitating a model with cooling rate as a variable. The wetting behavior of Al-Ce alloys and composites are explored, aiming to develop a model predicting contact angles based on composition and cooling rate, considering existing models (Wenzel, Cassie-Baxter) and the rule of mixtures. Additionally, the study assesses the influence of wetting on corrosion. |
