Abstract Scope |
Open circuit potential measurements were made to determine uranium chloride species activity in NaCl and eutectic NaCl-MgCl2, which are candidate salts for use in a molten salt reactor fuel. The operating temperature ranged from 500-650oC, and the measurement system used a uranium-zirconium working electrode and silver/silver chloride reference electrode. The activity coefficient of UCl3 in NaCl-MgCl2 ranged from 2.34x10-5 to 8.67x10-5, dependent upon temperature and concentration of uranium trichloride (0.25-11.55 wt.%). Fit of the OCP data to the Nernst equation resulted in 3.1 – 4.8 electrons transferred per U atom indicating the possibility for co-deposition of Mg2+ and U3+ under certain conditions. Measurements in eutectic NaCl-UCl3 (33 mol.%) were made using the same system from 600-675oC, and activity coefficient was calculated to be on the order of 1. OCP between a tungsten working electrode and silver/silver chloride reference electrode confirm UCl3 to be the dominant uranium species present in the salt. |
