Abstract Scope |
Using the physical vapor deposition method, we successfully created solid solution Mg-Ti alloys with various Mg:Ti ratios. Microstructural characterization using TEM and chemical analysis using STEM-EDS confirmed that the as-deposited samples are solid solutions of Mg and Ti. Incorporating Ti into Mg resulted in grain refinement and reduced surface roughness of the thin film post-deposition, which can directly influence the mechanical behavior of the thin film. For mechanical analysis, we conducted membrane deflection tests, tensile tests, and nanoindentation. The mechanical test results varied, which was attributed to process defects present in the tested volume. Overall, the addition of Ti to Mg produced a modified microstructure that is uniformly a solid solution with refined grains and fewer flaws and consequently, improved mechanical properties. |
