Abstract Scope |
Herein, we developed Al-based complex confused metallic glasses(CCMGs) overcoming glass-forming ability(GFA) and fragility trade-off by linking two design strategies of the chemically complex multicomponent alloying and the atomic-cluster tailoring. Specifically, we added multiple-equiatomic RE elements in Al84Ni10RE6 MGs and simultaneously manipulated these MGs to have their electronegativity differences close to the critical value at the transition boundary between eutectic and primary crystallization. The Al84Ni10(NdGdY-or-NdGdYEr)6 CCMGs show two times slower critical cooling rate for glass formation than those of Al84Ni10(La-or-Er)6 MGs, while having the larger fragility parameter. Furthermore, the statistical nanoindentation test exhibited the unique bimodality on shear band nucleation, and the proportion of the soft mode related to the shear band nucleation in the loosely-packed structures was increased in the CCMGs due to more fragile liquid behavior and complex RE-Al bonding natures. Consequently, our study paves the way to break through the characteristic limitations of MGs via developing the CCMGs. |
