Abstract Scope |
Co-Cr-Mo alloys with low carbon content are widely used in medical prosthetic implants due to their high strength, biocompatibility, and exceptional corrosion and wear resistance.
In this study, Co-Cr-Mo samples fabricated using an L-PBF process were subjected to Direct aging or solutionizing followed by aging at temperatures ranging from 750°C to 875°C. The microstructural evolution was analyzed using XRD, SEM, EBSD, EDS, and TEM techniques.
The as-built microstructure predominantly consisted of FCC grains, approximately 20-25 microns in size, with carbides located along the grain boundaries. Aging treatments accelerated the transformation from the γ-FCC phase to the ε-HCP phase, leading to significant hardening (from 400 to 700 HV). On the other hand, solutionized samples exhibited a slower phase transformation, with competing isothermal martensitic and other transformation mechanisms.
This presentation delves into the reasons for the differing phase transformation mechanisms and examines the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters that drive these transformations. |
