Abstract Scope |
Until the emergence of computer controlled microscopic analysis and high-speed computers for simulation, it was difficult and time consuming to accumulate data on all five macroscopic grain boundary parameters; most studies were limited to a handful of high symmetry grain boundaries. However, this constraint was lifted in the mid 1990s and, taking advantage of this opportunity, a team at Carnegie Mellon, including Rollett, began studying the distribution of grain boundaries in polycrystals as a function of five crystallographic parameters and the variation of grain boundary properties over these variables. In this talk, I will recall some of our early challenges and successes. I will also summarize the principal findings about grain boundary properties that have accumulated from almost 30 years of research in this area. |
