Abstract Scope |
Tantalum nitride (TaN) finds various applications in the biomedical field. The use of TaN coatings, especially in nanostructured forms, presents a valuable avenue for developing advanced and biocompatible surfaces for biomedical implants, exhibiting excellent hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. However, the form of thin coatings has limited the use of TaN as bulk. This research presents a groundbreaking advancement in the simultaneous synthesis and consolidation of TaN and reports the successful fabrication of bulky shapes via laser powder bed fusion technology. The process involves the controlled interaction of tantalum powders with nitrogen within the LPBF chamber, resulting in the formation of TaN. The results demonstrate the feasibility of generating bulky TaN samples and open up promising possibilities for practical applications for bone tissue engineering. This innovative approach not only expands the scope of TaN, but also emphasizes the potential of additive manufacturing techniques in advancing biomaterials synthesis and design. |
