Abstract Scope |
This study demonstrates a novel multiple-step severe plastic deformation (SPD) process for producing ultrafine-grained aluminum sheets. This particular multiple-step process includes high-pressure torsion (HPT) followed by cold rolling for 50% on annealed aluminum 1043 disks. The multiple-step SPD process is of significant interest due to its highly controlled processing parameters and larger sample size. Hardness evaluations show the formation of heterostructures characterized by extreme hardness at the peripheries and lower hardness at the centers in the HPT disk sample, while the sample after multiple-step process exhibits a similar trend with slightly lower overall hardness values. Mechanical properties are determined through miniaturized tensile testing with the digital image correlation method, capturing the entire strain field and local strain to observe shear band initiation, fracture behavior, and strain evolution. Additional microstructure changes are analyzed using X-ray diffraction, describing the heterogeneity of the multiple-step processed Al alloy sheets. |
