Abstract Scope |
In this study, we experimentally investigated Zr, Nb, and Zr/Nb nano metallic multilayers subjected to helium ion irradiation using Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS), micropillar compression tests, and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Theoretical insights were provided by Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. Our goal was to elucidate the higher density of helium bubbles in Zr compared to Nb and the presence of a denuded zone exclusively around the Nb interfaces. Additionally, we examined the evolution of irradiation hardening using nanoindentation measurements, analyzed through MD simulations. Furthermore, the MD simulations explained the enhanced yield strength observed in Zr/Nb nano metallic multilayers compared to single-crystal Nb and Zr. |
