| Abstract Scope |
Aluminum alloy is a lightweight material contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. However, the production of primary aluminum ingots through electrolytic smelting is a process that consumes a significant amount of electric power, posing a challenge to the widespread use of aluminum alloy. Recycled aluminum has a lower carbon footprint, but its applications are limited due to impurities. Fractional crystallization, a refining method, can enhance purity, although yields decrease for high-impurity scraps. In this study, electromagnetic stirring (EMS) was applied to increase yield. The molten Al-5%Si alloy was cooled while EMS was applied. Then, the semi-solid alloy was separated into a purified fraction and a residue containing impurities using a perforated metal plate. The purified fractions had a Si concentration of 1.4%, while the residue fractions had a Si concentration of 11.1%. These results suggest the potential for recycling casting aluminum alloy scraps into wrought alloy. |
