Abstract Scope |
Grain boundaries greatly influence many properties of engineering materials. Recent years have seen a rapid growth in evidence suggesting that materials interfaces are capable of first-order structural transformations in which the interface properties undergo discontinuous changes and have raised fundamental questions concerning the atomic structures and kinetic properties of these interface phases. I will present models of grain boundary phase transformations in crystalline systems and describe how line defects, specifically dislocations and line forces, play an important role in structural transitions within grain boundaries. In addition, I will describe techniques that enable studies of large-scale simulations of structural transformations within grain boundaries. |
