Abstract Scope |
Metastable phases in Al-Zn-Mg based 7000 series aluminum alloys are the primary nanoscale precipitates that contribute most to their impressive mechanical properties. The “precipitation trajectory” for the metastable nanoprecipitates in this ternary system has been well acknowledged as follow: Super-saturated solid solution (SSSS) → Vacancy Rich Clusters (VRC), GP zones (GP I and II) → η' → η2. In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were implemented to show how compositional and structural evolution occurs during η'→η2 transition by vacancy-mediated diffusion. On this basis, a schematic phase transition mechanism and the corresponding energetics of η'→η2 transition are presented, which provides insight into the unrevealed precipitation kinetics of these metastable nanoprecipitates. |
