Abstract Scope |
Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) is a technique to characterize crystallographic features in the scanning electron microscope. It is reliable and highly automated through commercial systems. However, community-driven open development of EBSD has been limited. The situation has changed recently, with the EMsoft suite of Fortran programs and the MATLAB toolbox AstroEBSD two notable examples of open-source software. Given the ease of use and availability of Python, we have developed kikuchipy (https://kikuchipy.org), a toolbox for analysis of EBSD patterns. The package builds on the HyperSpy library for multidimensional data analysis and supports pattern processing, virtual backscatter imaging, Hough and dictionary indexing and refinement, geometrical and kinematical simulations, and more. Readers for many file formats are available, making workflows file format agnostic. Workflows can be constructed with a few lines of code in transparent and reproducible Jupyter notebooks or scripts. We will demonstrate package functionality through application examples from metallurgy. |
