Abstract Scope |
FeCrAl alloys are candidate materials proposed for cladding of heat pipes used in microreactors due to their inherent corrosion and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. A key aspect of FeCrAl alloys is the aluminum content responsible for the alumina formation on the free surface that acts as a protective layer impeding the corrosion of the main alloy. Additionally, alumina is a great diffusion barrier that limits materials interaction at elevated temperatures. Thus, alumina may play a pivotal role in many reactor designs protecting the heat pipe cladding against the carburization due to its direct contact with carbon. Failing to consider this aspect would compromise the cooling operation of the heating pipes and lead to detrimental consequences for the microreactor. This presentation details the carburization origins of FeCrAl samples after long-term exposure to graphite and highlights the mechanisms to prevent this effect. |
