Abstract Scope |
The presence of a broad spectrum of structural relaxation times is one of the hallmarks of liquids and glasses. The knowledge of how this spectrum evolves through temperature and time is fundamental to understand aging and rejuvenation, glass transition and mechanical behavior. In this work we will present different experimental signatures of the structural dynamics in metallic glass-formers. From mechanical experiments, the dynamic spectrum is found to be constituted by a wide, high-frequency wing of reversible deformation modes, which determines the rheological behavior, stress relaxation and mechanical memory of these materials. We will show how all these phenomena can be interpreted within linear viscoelasticity and the relation between the mechanical spectrum and the thermodynamic evolution of the glass during structural relaxation. From scattering of coherent X-rays, we will show a unique microscopic insight of how the dynamic heterogeneity evolves in the supercooled liquid and glass transition temperature regions. |
