Abstract Scope |
TRistructural ISOtropic fuel (TRISO) is seen as a potential fuel for advanced reactors, but accurately characterizing the anisotropic heat transfer in TRISO fuel compacts has proven difficult. One promising technique is thermoreflectance (spatial domain or frequency domain), where variations in sample temperature caused by a modulated heat source are detected by changes in reflectivity, often of a film coating the sample. The necessity of taking many measurements to establish properties at a single point makes this a time-consuming process; in addition, it generally assumes a homogenous, isotropic material, which is not the case in TRISO compacts. We are developing a method of parallelizing thermoreflectance measurements by using a lock-in camera to microscopically image the sample, allowing points in all directions from the heat source to be evaluated in a single measurement. This allows both a greatly increased measurement speed and the ability to characterize more complex phenomena. |
