Abstract Scope |
While the modern convention is to divide the arts and sciences based on subjectivity and objectivity, art and science are much more alike than not. Scientific inquiry requires a creative spark in the same fashion that artistic creation needs a degree of technical and processing proficiency. Furthermore, the instances in which the arts and sciences are integrated can often yield unexpected synergistic benefits, demonstrated by the idea of the “renaissance man”. Penn State’s Materials Science department has maintained a glassblowing studio since the early 2000’s as an intentional space for transdisciplinary education. By combining traditional craft knowledge with analytical science, students from diverse backgrounds can share in the common cause of learning by making. This poster provides a case study for utilizing glassblowing as an educational supplement for both artists and scientists as well as for outreach and innovative research. |
