Abstract Scope |
Vacancy diffusion plays a crucial role in defect cluster growth and void formation in materials under irradiation. In this talk, I will discuss how vacancies can be controlled and trapped by chemical composition. Unlike in pure metals, where vacancies diffuse through random lattice walks, in concentrated alloys, vacancy diffusion is highly correlated. This extraordinary diffusion correlation, resulting from a reduced number of active vacancy jump pathways, leads to lower diffusivity and manifests as chemical trapping within a confined volume. By irradiating W-alloys, we demonstrate that the growth of vacancy clusters is effectively suppressed due to this trapping effect. |
