Abstract Scope |
Friction extrusion consolidates powder or scraps and extrudes them directly into a wrought product by large plastic deformation at elevated temperature. However, non-uniform structures and even defects in the extrudate have been observed and reported by several different works. Generally, these problems could be improved by selecting a suitable extrusion ratio and processing parameters. However, the thermomechanical conditions such as strain, strain rate and temperature for achieving uniform consolidation/mixing and homogeneous microstructure have not been determined. In this work, friction extrusion of Al6063 machining chips with added Cu and Zn powder at different processing parameters was performed and transversal cross-sections with different lack-of-mixing zones were obtained. Smoothed-particle hydrodynamics simulations were conducted to determine the flow path and thermomechanical history of the material along the radial direction of the extrudate. Combined with the microscopic observation, the thermomechanical criteria for achieving a uniform extrudate and homogeneous microstructure in friction extrusion are determined. |
