Abstract Scope |
In this research, we present a multimodal, multiscale analyses of slag samples obtained from two archaeological sites: Fort Ouiatenon (West Lafayette, Indiana, USA) and Abu Muslim qala (Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan). Employing techniques such as metallography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray computed tomography (XCT) we shed light on the ancient metalworking practices employed at these sites. We used XCT analysis to capture the different phases present in the archaeological samples and established a link between the metalworking processes and the microstructure in the samples. Additionally, we carried out SEM-based correlative characterization of the samples to gain a comprehensive understanding of the composition of slags from the two different archeological sites. The comprehensive characterization presented in this study contributes towards accurately identifying and dating metalworking process at the sites, as well as helping improve our knowledge of ancient metallurgical processes. |
