Abstract Scope |
This research work presents results of experimental studies on the effects of different impact velocities and energies for the impacts performed using the same impactor. Also, the equivalent energy impact tests were performed with three different impactor masses and corresponding impact velocities to analyse the effects of the impactor mass and corresponding velocity in epoxy-based composites reinforced with basalt fibers. These low velocity impacts were carried out at different temperatures (room temperature and +80 °C) in an instrumented drop weight impact tower. The experiments probed the effects of impactor mass, velocity, and three different impact energy levels by analyzing the patterns of induced damage, energy absorption, penetration resistance and force-displacement response. Microscopic non-destructive damage assessment techniques (profilometry and C-scans) were used to investigate various damage modes induced by the drop weight impact. Composites under consideration were obtained by vacuum bagging prepregs followed by autoclave consolidation. In an attempt to develop a recycling-oriented society, this work investigated also the recycling of basalt fibers from prepreg scraps by pyro-gasification, providing the effects of different process parameters on the tensile and morphological properties of recovered single fibers. |
