Abstract Scope To date, experimental crystal plasticity commonly uses observational experiments in which tensile bars with specific, randomly-chosen microstructures are loaded and observed. This work will introduce microstructure clones—specimens with identical grain structures. These clone samples allow for controlled experiments to be performed in experimental crystal plasticity. That is, one can test a sample with a given microstructure and an identical sample with an induced change (e.g. a notch added, different dislocation densities, deliberate differences in grain boundaries, etc.). Controlled experiments with microstructural clones allow for a much deeper understanding of grain scale structural mechanics and have the potential to dramatically improve crystal plasticity models. This work presents results of microstructural clone experiments in pure nickel to provide insight into how changes in microstructure and loading can impact polycrystal behavior. SNL is managed and operated by NTESS under DOE NNSA contract DE-NA0003525
