Abstract Scope |
To develop the Mg metal production process, molten salt electrolysis of MgO using an Ag cathode, followed by vacuum distillation, was investigated. In the electrolysis, the influences of electrolysis temperature and Mg concentration in Mg alloys on current efficiency were investigated. The electrolysis was conducted by applying 1.39–1.46 A at 1083–1163 K for 7.0–20.5 h in an Ar gas atmosphere, and 8.53–21.5 mass% Mg alloys were produced under a cell voltage of 1.95–2.11 V. The current efficiency decreased with the increase in electrolysis temperature and Mg concentration in the Mg alloy, owing to the increase in the vapor pressure of Mg. Under certain conditions, the current efficiency reached 85.1 %. In addition, after vacuum distillation of the Mg alloys at 1300 K, Mg metal with a purity above 99.9996 % was produced. Therefore, the proposed process is feasible for efficiently producing Mg metal from MgO. |
