Abstract Scope |
The continuous impact of ball bearings with different powders provides a means to drive materials into solid solution while creating a nanocrystalline structure. Key considerations to this processing include the size and hardness of the media, shape and hardness of the milling vessel, and total volume of powder material. While refractory powders often require media and tooling for effective processing, we demonstrate that proper heat treatments of a jacketed tool steel milling vessel can achieve desired mixing as well as nano-crystallite sizes. Using W-10Cr, we link these processing variables to the tooling itself, processing parameters, and even impurity pick-up. These outcomes are then assessed to the nanophase sintering characteristics and mechanical properties in the consolidated billet. |
