Abstract Scope |
Advances in understanding phase transformations and solidification in Al-Fe alloys modified with Ni are critical for better control of microstructural coarsening. This research could improve Al alloy properties, making them more tolerant to Fe contamination and supporting recycling efforts. The present study investigates the impact of the cooling rates on the microstructural coarsening of the Al-Fe-Ni alloy at two scales: dendritic/cellular and eutectic. The alloy was manufactured using a directional solidification technique employing either low (~0.5 K/s) or high ( ~10K/s) cooling rates. It was envisioned to stabilize both the growth of cells and the formation of very refined fibrous eutectic. Optical microscopy, SEM, and EBSD analyses revealed that increasing cooling rate reduced the cellular/dendritic spacing and interfibre spacing. The growth kinetics of fibers as a function of the solidification velocity is compared to previous literature. Tensile tests demonstrate that finer eutectic fibers increase alloy strength. |
