Adiabatic shear banding is a form of ductile damage where the relationship between plastic work and material temperature is critical. We present a new physical model for the plastic deformation of metallic materials which accounts for softening due to increased dislocation mobility with heating and dynamic recrystallization which also predicts an evolving Taylor-Quinney factor with material state. This is used within a non-local computational framework for adiabatic shear banding which explicitly represents the shear zone by a weak form embedded displacement discontinuity region. A model for the thickness dimension of the adiabatic shear band and the embedded computational region is used and the predicted thickness based upon local loading conditions at the point of shear band nucleation. The theory and computational framework is used to describe specific experiments performed on steel and stainless steel alloys loaded dynamically. Physical insights into the shear banding process will be discussed. |
