Abstract Scope |
The objective of the study was to investigate the improvement of fatigue life of unidirectional carbon fiber composite (UD-CFRP) by modification of vinyl ester matrix with rubber particles under cryogenic condition. Modified by rubber particles and original vinyl ester resin were prepared particles as the matrix for the composite. The static tensile strength and tensile-tensile fatigue lives of UD-CFRP specimens were measured under static and cyclic loading conditions, where the loading rate and cyclic frequency were 5.0 mm/min and 4 Hz, respectively, under room and cryogenic condition. The relationship between the change of crack length and that of compliance the notched specimen with initiated crack was evaluated after the crack propagation during the fatigue process. The change of energy release rate of the notched specimen was also investigated by the crack growth tests. The test results showed that the static tensile strength of UD-CFRP specimens was decreased 17.7% under room temperature condition, when the matrix was modified by rubber particles, while the strength was not significantly affected by the temperature condition. The fatigue life of the specimen was also improved about 2.9 times under cryogenic condition by the modification. The critical energy release rate range of UD-CFRP specimens was improved 7.01% under cryogenic conditions by the modification. The improvement of the fatigue life was explained by the change of crack propagating rate related with the modification of the matrix by rubber particles. |
