Abstract Scope |
Liquid lithium breeder options are one of the most attractive options for tritium breeding. However the interaction between lithium and the structural material is poorly characterised. In this work we compare the use of immersion testing with droplet testing for the rapid screening of lithium resistant materials. In silicon carbide composites we see a significant attack of residual oxygen and carbon from the manufacturing process leaving the material structurally unsound after testing. In vanadium alloys we see enhanced attack of defects in the microstructure and crystallographic effects on corrosion rates. These lead to inhomogeneous structures after testing which may effect subsequent performance of the the material. |
